The Academy of Christian Leadership (ACL) is a classical and Christian academy for students in Grades 5-12 that helps parents to fulfill their God-ordained task of educating their children to love God with their heart, mind, and strength. As a non-denominational Christian school, our Statement of Faith seeks to embody the historic core of orthodox Christian faith and practice, and our goal is for our graduates to exemplify the core Christian virtues of faith, hope, and love.
As a classical academy, we train students to learn and critically reflect on the Great Conversation as found in the great works of literature, history, and philosophy. Our curriculum is unified around the aim of cultivating Christian leaders who are both wise and articulate, and who can draw on a wide knowledge base to think critically and as Christians about the issues of our day. Central to the classical tradition is the trivium, a three-part, cumulative core curriculum consisting of grammar, logic, and rhetoric, which trains students to master the fundamentals of language, thought, and expression. In addition, our students take at least three years of Latin, and are required to memorize numerous speeches, histories, rhetorical forms, creeds, passages of Scripture, and poetry. While we recognize that there is nothing distinctly Christian about classical education, we believe that there are clear points of harmony in the two traditions, and where they diverge we believe that the Christian worldview critiques the classical.
Since we believe that an integral part of being a Christian leader in today’s culture requires a solid grounding in math and science, ACL’s core curriculum includes a math sequence culminating in pre-calculus, a science sequence that ends with physics, and a vibrant art program that includes classes on painting, art history, sculpture, and drawing, all of which focus on seeing and expressing the beauty of God’s world. In response to the so-called “obesity epidemic” and the striking research linking academic excellence with physical fitness, ACL has begun implementing an innovative fitness-based physical education program.
ACL is a member of The Association of Classical and Christian Schools (ACCS) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), and is chartered by the State of New York with authority to issue Regents and ACL diplomas.
There are no classes on Fridays at ACL, and we reserve these days for an enrichment program that gives students more hands-on opportunities to enhance their education and their development of Christian character. And in an attempt to cultivate cultural diversity in our school, ACL is in the process of getting approval to accept international students.
